Our Story & Legacy
Barber Prosthetics Clinic was opened in 1991 by John Barber CP (c) and operated under the name John Barber Prosthetics Clinic for several years. In July 2005, David Moe CP (c) and Lorne Winder CP ( c ), as partners, bought the clinic from John and his wife Karan. After a couple of years, the name organically changed to Barber Prosthetics Clinic, and it continues to operate as such. In 2015, Lorne Winder retired, and David and Angela Moe have continued as partners in this ever-progressing and ever-evolving company.
When Dave and Lorne took over Barber in 2005, they had huge dreams, aspirations, and expectations for the clinic. Their primary focus was to provide the best possible care for every patient who entered through the doors of Barber. And that, of course, continues to be the fundamental core value of Barber Prosthetics Clinic.
There were many other aspirations Dave and Lorne strived for, things that were jointly very important to both and to the betterment of the entire field of prosthetics. The value of education was a key ideal. Lorne and Dave both taught part-time at BCIT for several years. Providing support in hands-on education for P&O students has been an ongoing endeavour at Barber since 2005. Students have come to Barber to shadow, listen, and learn hands-on about the profession and all that it brings. This has been an ongoing learning experience for both the students and the staff at Barber.
In 2010, Barber had the opportunity to be a part of a research study in partnership with BCIT. This was the start of a new and deep passion for participatory research in the field. In 2014, Barber created the position of Research Prosthetist, the first at the clinic level in Canada. We have since headed or have been research partners in dozens of research projects from which several papers and articles have been published and referenced in other research papers internationally.
In 2019, Barber underwent an extensive renovation, resulting in a larger clinical space, a brighter, inviting, and modern reception and clinical area, and a reconfigured, more efficient fabrication area. We are so proud of our space and are so happy everyone can now enjoy the warm, bright, and inviting new space in its entirety.
Barber Prosthetics Clinic is ever evolving in its pursuit of excellence in patient care, and we promise always to provide this care at the highest level. We continue this evolution through our dedicated clinical team, our skillful technical team, our supportive administrative team, our community service, our professional continuing education, our active support of prosthetic education, and through our vital, innovative research.
Stay with us. Join us. Help to make us even better as Barber continues to evolve.
The Lorne Winder Library
In dedication to our beloved past colleague and friend, we are proud to have named our small clinic library the “Lorne Winder Library”. Lorne had many passions in the world of prosthetics, education and pediatric prosthetics being at the top.
We have been thoughtfully building our library with mainly children’s books that reflect these passions and tell stories that so many can relate to. This is an ever-evolving, ever-growing compilation of books, and we look forward to sharing our library and the wonderful community it creates with everyone, young and old, who comes into Barber.
